Truck Platform Fabrication for a Leading OEM

At SPEC FAB, we’re a metal fabrication service that provides a wide range of services to all types of OEMs. Recently, we were brought into a project to support a major truck body manufacturer by fabricating platforms for their line of stake bed trucks. Read on to learn a little more about this project, and check out our work!

These truck platforms were fabricated out of 5052 and 6061 series aluminum, structural C-channel, and heavy-duty aluminum E-track for maximum durability and strength. With 24” sides that swing open and an array of options, each of these truck platforms were built from hundreds of component parts that were fabricated in-house or brought in from third-party suppliers. In all cases, the SPEC FAB team performed final fit-up and assembly to deliver perfect finished truck platforms to our client.

Although the client provided a full drawing package, our designers and project managers suggested ideas to improve the manufacturability and quality of the end product. Then, we got to work pushing parts through a range of fabrication services that are available on our Honey Brook, PA fabrication campus, including flat laser cutting, tube laser cutting, water jet cutting, welding fit-up, assembly and more.

Working with the piece upside down, our metal fabrication shop built the structural platform that the truck bed rests upon. Then, we built the front bulkhead. Lastly, we mounted side gates and hardware, including 6,000 pound tie-down straps, E-channel, and more. This truck bed was designed to haul heavy loads, and so the structural elements were fabricated to support heavy-duty use cases.

In order to produce a finished project that our client can receive and bolt directly to their truck chassis, our team followed a strict quality control process consisting of initial inspection at the beginning of each fabrication process, followed by a final inspection of each completed truck platform.

With all parts and weldments undergoing final inspection by our experts, the client could get their product to market fast. And thanks to blasting and powder coating of all parts in our oversized, 22-foot powder coating facility and the caulking of all visible seams, these truck platforms leave our shop with a polished finish.
