Recent Fabrication & Welding Project Round Up!

As a leading metal fabrication and welding service in PA, our team is constantly putting out finished projects for a wide range of applications. And while many of our projects are for commercial and industrial applications, we occasionally work on unique projects for more artistic end uses.

Read on to see examples of two of our most recent projects! One is a custom fabricated funnel for mixing chemicals, and the other is a custom fabricated base for a high-end, artistic coffee table. These two applications couldn’t be more different, but as you can see, the skills necessary to design, fabricate and build these two projects were right in our wheelhouse.

Fabricating a Custom Funnel for Mixing Chemicals

This uniquely-shaped project was designed and fabricated for a company that makes various powdered chemicals. They needed a funnel that would allow their team to feed material into their mills more efficiently.

It was imperative that the funnel attach seamlessly to the top of their existing equipment, and they needed it built from food-grade stainless steel in a unique shape that would allow their raw materials to flow most effectively.

Starting with a hand sketch and a paper mockup, our designers developed a detailed 3D model using CAD software. Once the 3D model was finalized, our fabrication experts came up with a manufacturing plan.

Using waterjet cutting, roll forming and TIG welding, we created a prototype out of 16-gauge 316 stainless that worked perfectly! From there, we were able to fabricate the final version. Today, the funnel is used successfully to ensure the proper loading of the machine and efficient mixing of raw materials.

Fabricating Seamless Table Bases

When it comes to creating metal structures with artistic flair, our team can deliver! And this project shown above was no different. When a furniture manufacturer in New York City had an idea for a unique, artistic coffee table, they reached out to Spec Fab to create the bases.

Starting from a concept picture, our team developed CAD drawings, 3D models, and shop drawings of these unique pieces.

With a goal of a seamless exterior, we had to consider the best fabrication methods to meet the challenge. Using carefully rolled sheet metal, we created the fluted upright components. They were then TIG welded from the inside and joined with laser cut top pieces to bring the design to life. Finally, all exterior seams were sanded flush for a uniform external appearance.

To complete the table, the bases were placed on a solid wood plinth, and topped with a custom acrylic tabletop. Without the knowledge of how they were fabricated, they look like solid pieces of formed metal to the average observer!
