Bump Forming – A Great Way to Create Radiused Metal Parts

If you’re not familiar with the process of bump forming, check out the projects below! When working with an experienced metal fabrication service, bump forming is an easy way to create radiuses in sheet metal parts without the need for complex rolling machinery. Even better, bump forming allows a good fabricator to easily create complex radiuses on parts with a high degree of precision.

These stainless steel parts shown above are utilized in a water filtration plant. They contain valves that direct the flow of liquid within a process piping system. To create these valves, we laser cut flat stainless steel sheet, and then bump form it on a CNC press brake.

Thanks to offline programming of our machine tools, we can make this part repeatable even with a somewhat tricky forming process. And thanks to highly-trained operators, the right programming software, and experience forming a wide array of complex, close-tolerance parts, we can output these valves consistently even over large quantities of parts.

This complex part shown above is made from 3/8” mild steel. What makes it highly complex are the multiple radii present over a three to four foot span. Plus, the cutout in the middle of the part requires different tonnage on the press brake for the center section which adds to the complexity of the project.

Once our expert press brake operators have formed these parts, our team tack welds in a mating part before they’re delivered to the client. The client then finishes the part with additional welding and assembly into the final product.

If you’re looking for a metal forming supplier who can deliver long sheet metal parts with multiple discrete radii, contact us today. Our fabrication experts are standing by to help!
