From Napkin to Fabricated Product!

We were asked recently to work on a very unique project for Terre Hill Stormwater Systems. Terre Hill builds water quality structures that use a series of inclined plates to remove sediment and other pollutants from storm water. This project was for a highly-customized installation at a very high-profile construction project in lower Manhattan.

Our first step was to look at rough hand drawings provided by Terre Kleen’s engineers.

Once we understood the project parameters, we created 3D drawings and models in our SolidWorks design software. Using SolidWorks allowed us to look for any interference or fabrication issues in advance of creating the parts for this project.

Once the individual component parts were fabricated, our team relocated to Terre Hill’s facility in order to weld the parts into finished products. Due to the size and weight of the concrete box that the unit needed to fit within (approximately 30,000 lbs.!), as well as the complex fit of the assembly itself, our technicians had to weld the entire project while it was nested in place within its concrete box. This was definitely one of our more complex welding projects, and it took three of our technicians a week to complete!

This project was a perfect collaboration from start to finish and is a great example of how the team at SPEC FAB delivers custom solutions for our clients! We met on a weekly basis with the client and other stakeholders in order to develop a plan for building this highly-customized unit. In the end, the project was installed in lower Manhattan and currently works day in and day out filtering sediment from storm water.
