Fabricating & Welding a Custom Aluminum Water Filtration Tank

We recently completed a unique project that’s a great example of how our PA fabrication and welding service can customize a solution for a specific application.

Our client, Terre Hill Stormwater Systems, wanted to create a variation on one of their existing water filtration products. Their systems funnel storm water over a series of fins to filter out debris, and are a necessary component of building projects in major metropolitan areas.

This new custom filter system had to fit within the specific height and weight requirements of a new parking garage being built in White Plains, New York. The project entailed fabricating the same basic design of the client’s existing filters but with lighter weight material and a smaller footprint.

Our starting point was the clients’ existing CAD drawings. First we created 3D models using SolidWorks software, then we developed a plan to fabricate and leak-test the customized unit.

Working with 1/8” marine-grade 5052 aluminum, we created this custom product using the following in-house processes:

  • 3D modeling
  • Laser cutting
  • Forming
  • MIG welding
  • Assembly
  • Testing

Our last step was to call in the local fire company to fill the tank with water and make sure there were no leaks!

Ultimately, the tank had to accommodate the pressure of 400 cubic feet of water weighing over 3,000 pounds without failing. We are happy to report that the unit passed with flying colors!

Working with our customer we were able to collaborate on a customized solution that met all of the project’s unique design requirements and limitations.
